System of speech synthesis

First version: 1996 Last version: No more versions

Application:
The system was produced for CNET (France Télécom)
Description:
The system includes a dictionary of diphones and a «Linguistic Processor» - a number of algorithms and programs under a common name. The modification of pitch and sound duration is made by PSOLA (France Télécom). Diphones are segments of real speech signals, containing sound boundaries in consonant-vowel, vowel-consonant, vowel-vowel, consonant-consonant combinations. The dictionary includes all sound combinations possible in Russian and counts 2537 units. It is supplemented with a list of rules for production of theoretically possible but exceptionally rare and theoretically impossible diphones. Following the requirements of the PSOLA technology diphones were selected from logotoms pronounced by a professional speaker with so-called "normative saint-peterburgian pronunciation ". Lexicographic basis of the linguistic processor consists of about 110,000 words (it corresponds to about 4 millions word forms). Algorithm of linguistic analysis is specially oriented to diphonic synthesis. Linguistic processor performs conversion of any written text into its sound realisation. It consists of two units, each including independent parts. The first unit is Phonetic Automatic Transcriber of written text. It helps to represent the text being synthesised as a string of diphones contained in the dictionary. The second unit provides the prosodic analysis of this chain.
